Blue Cross To Offer Health Plan to Unemployed
Blue Cross has decided to extend a new opportunity at health insurance to Rhode Island citizens who are unemployed. Previously, the company’s Direct Pay plans were only available to people with employment who did not have the ability to receive health insurance through that employee. In many cases, this was due to working for a small company which could not afford the high cost of carrying a group health insurance policy. Now, however, these Direct Pay plans will be extended to people who have lost their jobs and are eligible for COBRA. COBRA coverage being the insurance available through the federal government which allows people to pay the entire cost of a health insurance policy on their own, pricey, but sometimes better than nothing. Will the new Blue Cross Plans provide a better alternative to pricey COBRA plans, or are they just out to capitalize on people’s misfortune?
