Boston Health Care Leaders Told to Rein in Costs

Insurance company and hospital executives are being directed by Governor Deval Patrick to rein in the rapidly rising costs of healthcare or else they are likely to face government intervention. The blame for these skyrocketing costs is falling on insurance premiums and the charges that hospitals submit to insurance companies in the form of claims. The state Division of Insurance has the power to reject rates that it deems excessive. Until now, that authority has not been excercised, however Patrick feels that it is time to use the power. After the meeting, executives agreed to work towards payment reform and acknowledged the urgency of the problem. Do you think this type of intervention will bring about a postive outcome?
