California Lawsuit Against Gender Discrimination in Health Insurance
It has been a long standing practice for women to be charged a disproportionately higher premium for their health insurance benefits when compared to men of the same age and health status. Health Insurance companies claim that this is due to the higher incedent of usage among women, citing that women are more likely to seek preventative care as well as treatment for actual medical problems. In California, the City of San Francisco has filed a lawsuit against insurance regulators claiming that this bias is unacceptable. The discrimination that women face in the arena of health care is unconstitutional by their claims, and California hopes to be among the states which have outlawed the practice. What are your thoughts on charging women more for health care? Do you think California will succeed?
