Deal With Sanford Health To Save a Life
For a three year old boy with a deadly brain tumor, the deal that Sanford Health and his family reached to provide for his care could very well mean the difference between life and death. Cooper Urbaniak, who was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor is facing chemotherapy treatments and radiation, which could top $400,000. Sanford Health Plan, the family’s insurance provider, had deemed his treatments “experimental” and had denied the claim. The family went to court and won, meaning that Cooper will begin his treatment at the University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital in about two weeks. Now the family can shift their battle from fighting the insurance company, to fighting for Cooper’s life. Why do so many people and families have to face the battle against getting their claim approved before they can even fight for their lives? What needs to change so that people can get the treatment they need without all the struggle?
