As all costs go up worldwide, of course physicians, hospitals, insurance companies are going to have to charge more. Pack the pipe and smoke it.

A pipe dream. The high cost of health insurance is systemically due to unhealthy lifestyles (health claims have soared) just as the credit crisis is due to bad financial decisions on the part of individuals. Call it rampant consumerism. Many of the world economies depend on our buying habits.

For instance, today we heard that the financial crisis has undercut the consumer confidence index to 38 in October from 61.4 in September. One result: Israel stocks were humming along as much as 2.7% higher on Tuesday in the wake of a quarter-point rate cut by the Bank of Israel -- and then the U.S. consumer-confidence report hit, helping send the benchmark index into the red.

When the lifestyles of Americans improve health premiums will come down. Insurance companies are not in a not-for-profit business. And, of course, many many companies depend on that lifestyle for their profits (read Twinkies, Starbucks, etc,)
