Health Insurance Not A Guarantee of Care
While the focus of health care reform is centered on eliminating the number of Americans without health insurance, will have coverage actually equal having care? A problem that often goes overlooked is that of finding a primary care physician. For one thing, there has been a decrease in the number of med school graduates going into practice as primary care physicians, instead more are choosing careers in various specialty practices. Also, physicians have a choice when it comes to accepting health insurance or not, and many are choosing not to take more Medicare patients due to the lowered rate of reimbursement. If the government enacts a plan of Medicare for all, how would this affect the number of physicians available? Would more choose to accept the government’s plan, or would there be a greater shortage in providers?
