In Raleigh, NC the pool is open for people without insurance through an employer and who cannot get an individual policy due to preexisting medical conditions. Those taking advantage of enrolling during this period will begin coverage in January of 2009. The pool was created in 2007 as an effort to help insure thousands of residents who had little or no other options for affordable and available health insurance coverage. The pool has been dubbed “Inclusive Health” to put emphasis on it’s goal of leaving no one out. The next priority is to continue builing a network of physicians and providers to take care of the needs of all of North Carolina’s Inclusive Health memers. How successful are these types of high risk pools? What are the pros and cons? Read more here

The high risk pool is the way to go. Every state should have it for sure.

How much does it cost? No point in having a pool that nobody can afford.

People need to have options…everyone should have an opportunity to secure insurance.

These are worthwhile attempts at coverage. I like the fact that each State can put these kinds of programs in place. It does beg the question of portability to other jurisdictions.
