The parents and care providers of autistic children (and adults) face incredible challanges. Insurance companies that insure a child before the onset of the disease should be fully responsible to cover their care. That being said I strongly advocate federally subsidized state programs to insure their total health needs. That includes autistic related issues for their parents and care providers, as well as, increased funding to track the huge increase in the disease, research into its possible cuases and cure research.

Wow...this is a big subject! I'm not sure what it will take for this to change. I think it all comes from awareness. Burdens are built on information. People can't have a burden for things that they don't really know and understand. To change the current view of autism, it will probably take a little campaigning.

In order for private health insurance carriers to pick up the tab for the medical treatments for autism, they would have to generate additional revenue. And that tends to come in the form of rate increases for everyone. What if the government stepped in with a program like Medicare for autism?

Again, I think this relates back to the doctors etc. There still is not enough information out there on Autism, what it is etc so I wouldn't place the entire brunt of the blame on the insurance companies.
